What to check before accepting a regional job
A job ad can look perfect and still be wrong for your 88 days. This checklist helps you ask better questions before you travel.
Ask for the exact postcode
Do not rely on "near Cairns", "regional WA" or "farm area". Ask for the exact worksite postcode and check it before saying yes. Some towns have multiple nearby areas with different eligibility rules.
Confirm the actual tasks
Job titles can be vague. "Farm hand" might mean eligible livestock work, or it might mean general maintenance that does not clearly match specified work. Ask what you will do each day.
Check hours and pay structure
Ask whether the job is hourly, casual, full-time, part-time or piece rate. Ask how many days per week are normally available and whether work changes with weather or demand.
Ask about proof before you start
- Will you receive payslips?
- Will payment go to your bank account?
- Will the employer provide an ABN or business details?
- Can you keep rosters, timesheets or written work records?
Accommodation questions matter
If accommodation is tied to the job, ask the weekly price, bond, room type, transport, cancellation rules and whether deductions appear clearly on payslips.
"Hi, I am interested in the role. Could you please confirm the exact worksite postcode, main daily tasks, pay type, expected days per week and whether payslips are provided?"
When to walk away
Be careful if the employer refuses to share the postcode, asks for large upfront payments, only wants cash, avoids written details or pressures you to travel immediately without clear information.
