How farm work seasonality affects your 88 days
Farm work is not equally available all year. The right postcode at the wrong time can still mean slow weeks, fewer shifts and more stress.
Why season matters
Many crops have planting, thinning, picking, packing and post-harvest periods. Demand can rise quickly during peak harvest and drop just as fast after the season ends.
Ask about the stage of the season
Before travelling, ask whether the farm is starting, in peak harvest, slowing down or waiting for weather. "There is work here" is less useful than "we expect five days per week from next Monday for six weeks".
Weather can change everything
Rain, heat, floods, cyclones and crop conditions can affect shifts. If you are paid only when work is available, slow weeks may stretch your timeline.
Do not rely on one employer only
A stronger plan includes nearby alternatives. Save similar postcodes, check nearby towns and ask other backpackers whether work is currently active.
Do not ask only "is this postcode eligible?" Ask "is this postcode active right now for the type of work I can actually get?"
